A marathon is a special challenge for athletes. They have to run 42 kilometres in one go. Many marathon runners train for an event like this for a whole year.
They must be continuously fit in order to keep up with this goal. Legend tells that during a battle in Ancient Greece, a messenger ran from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce the victory of the Athenians. This was about 40 kilometres. This messenger collapsed upon arrival in Athens and dropped dead.
