And why not! The French had decided earlier than the Germans to commonly adorn the “R4” with paint from a wide selection of colours. This colour range also included a crisp light green, which long remained a particular favourite - also in Germany. German customers appreciated the “R4” as one of the most agile and affordable foreign-made small vehicles - a typical family car. The demand for the estate car surged to record highs, particularly in 1967 and later, when the R4 radiator grille called particular attention to the Renault diamond. Notwithstanding, the French compact car with its handy tailgate did not possess today’s cult status at the time it was produced, but simply served its driver’s everyday driving and transporting needs - with no frills and furbelows.
